The Gwinnett County Master Gardeners Association recently awarded the Community Garden at Snellville a grant of $518 to support the building of a brand new greenhouse.
This greenhouse is part of the Garden’s master plan to provide more space for families to grow flowers, food for their own consumption, or crops to donate to local charities. The master plan also will include barns for tools, pavilions, and an amphitheater that can be used for both youth and adult seminars.
In 2013, the Community Garden received a donation so that it could purchase a used greenhouse and other equipment. An additional request was then made to the Association for startup costs so that the greenhouse could become operational in 2016.
Funds from the grant will now allow the Garden to have a protected space for propagating plants and sowing seeds, and will be able to offer classes to the community so that gardening skills can be taught. The printing of Brochures is one way that the Garden can provide more information about these courses and draw the attention of the community to them.
In addition, funds form the grant will provide a location for the Gwinnett County Extension Office and Master Gardeners to use for demonstrations and classes, and enable the Garden to conduct plant sales in the spring and fall, leading to more fundraising efforts.
