The event followed months and weeks of planning, with the appreciative crowd eager to celebrate what the memorial stands for and the respect it shows to fallen Georgians.
It was an emotional event, with Snellville Mayor Pro Tem Tom Witts giving a plea to the gathered audience outside of City Hall.
There were also heart-tugging stories told by a number of veterans. Set against the calming backdrop of the memorial, complete with its waterfall and relit eternal flame, Jim Leiker representing the Disabled American Veterans said:
“Remember. Remember. For God’s sake, remember.”
With warm weather and blue skies, the event was a celebration of all the hard work put in by so many volunteers and local people. Right up until the last minute people were preparing the ground, with Mayor Witts explaining:
“It’s pretty awesome, after the last 10 days, if you knew what this looked liked three days ago, we had people bust their butt.”
The mood through the evening was very upbeat as a result, with live music and the star spangled banner all proudly resplendent in the spring sun.
