The Atlanta City Council has approved funding for repairs to DeKalb Avenue that will extend to the Decatur area’s Ridgecrest Road, resulting in a smoother, faster trip for Decatur residents traveling back and forth to Atlanta.
A unanimous vote by Atlanta City Council has delegated $5.4m to fix a 3.6-mile length of DeKalb Avenue stretching to Ridgecrest Road in Decatur from Jackson Street in Atlanta.
Traveling on DeKalb has been a bumpy ride for some time due to its many potholes, but with the repairs it is hoped this will be a thing of the past. Additionally, a number of other improvements will be made to the road. Planned improvements include doing away with the reversible lane, a dedicated left turn lane being added, road resurfacing, inclusion of bike lanes in some sections, and sidewalk repairs.
Some businesses engage a flyer printing service to inform their customers of any detours they might have to take when roads are closed for repairs.
In a news release issued by Keisha Lance Bottoms, the mayor of Atlanta said the aim is to make the road more inclusive for all users, from drivers to cyclists to pedestrians, and ultimately safer for everyone.
The project, which is slated to start later in the summer, will be overseen by the Atlanta Department of Transportation.
