Comcast and Decatur’s city council have come to an agreement regarding a conflict over the local fiber optics network, which means that work can now start on a new network.
Decatur’s city council recently approved a contract to build a completely new network. The new network will be built by Network Cabling Infrastructures Inc. for about $2m. The new network will be designed to serve Decatur schools as well, which is why the schooling system has agreed to contribute $653,000 towards the project.
The new cabling system will be installed starting in June and will take up to 14 months to complete. Another project that Decatur’s city council wishes to complete in tandem is the upgrading of the sidewalks along East Lake Drive and Oakview Road. Implementing these upgrades together will allow the cables to be placed under the sidewalks before they are renovated. Some monetary issues still need to be solved regarding the installation of the new network. The city has been using the old network for free for over 10 years after it failed to renew the franchise agreement that it had with Comcast. Comcast has proven that it tried to negotiate a new agreement that did not pan out. The city has agreed to pay Comcast $12,500 per year for two years to make up for the 10 years of free service. Comcast stated this amount is less than what it originally planned to charge the city.
