The University of Georgia is organizing this community project with the goal of getting a headcount for the number of butterflies and bees in the area. The organizers also hope to educate people along the way and find out how the state’s insects are faring. Promotional Products could be used to spread the word about such an event.
For Decatur nature lovers keen to participate, all they need is a plant that pollinators like, a way to record the number of insects visiting, and internet access. Becky Griffin, who organized the census, said that outreach is an important part of the project. She adding:
“One of the goals is to increase the entomology literacy of our citizens. As younger kids grow up and more people become interested, it is a way for them to truly see what is in their yard.”
The website for the census has instructions on how to attract select insects and how to upload the final count. People who need assistance will be able to speak to entomologists (insect experts) over social media while the count is ongoing.
This is the census’s second year. Researchers hope that the information gathered will help them to keep taking care of pollinator populations, which have been declining over the past few years.
The census is scheduled to take place on August 21 and 22.
