Jacksonville Startup Weekend will take place from January 20-22 at the Student Union Building of the University of North Florida. This event challenges you to build a web or mobile application which could be the first step in starting a real business.
The event will bring together software developers, graphic designers and business professionals who will work in teams to create the application. The event also features speakers Kevin Riley, David W. Hayes, John A. Delancy and Jacksonville Mayor Alvin Brown. There will also be several mentors available throughout the weekend to work with each team.
The event will also be a chance for local Jacksonville business owners and potential employees to network. Don’t forget your business card. Printing some extras would be a good idea; you never know who you might meet.
At the beginning attendees will vote on the top ideas for application projects. They will then form into teams to work on the project. The weekend will wrap up with judging of the applications and the presentation of awards.
The Startup Weekend Blog has some advice on “How to Create a Real Company out of Startup Weekend.” Their suggestions are:
1. Enlist a diverse and skill-complementary team – find people from different backgrounds and complementary skills
2. Think big – develop an application that has room for growth
3. Build a Minimum Viable Product – make sure application can develop
4. Get feedback from your target users (not other geeks) – go outside and ask people what they think of the application
5. Take the most of the mentors – listen to what they say and take it seriously
