Jacksonville park celebrates birthday

The first Annual JWJ (James Weldon Johnson) Birthday 5k and Block Party will be coming to Jacksonville in mid-June. This year will mark James Weldon Johnson's 154th birthday anniversary.

The 5k will kick off the event with walkers and runners starting at James Weldon Park and going through the area where the Johnson family lived, known as the Lavilla neighborhood. Historical facts about this civil rights hero will be posted along the way. The route will bring the participants back to the park for a block party.

A one-mile fun run will take place before the 5k at 5:30 pm. Registration for the one-mile run will be $38.53 in May, $43.85 from June 1st to the 13th and $54.50 on race day. Registration for the 5k will be $38.53 through May, $43.85 from June 1st to June 13th and $54.50 on race day, and runners will start the race at 6:00 pm.

Race amenities will include event T-Shirts, finisher medals, age group and overall awards, chip timing, team competition and birthday cupcakes at the block party, which will also feature DJ Nickfresh, food trucks, champagne, and games.

Businesses and organizations that support events like this often go to local Print shops and have poster printing done to get the word out to their communities.
