Riverside was platted in 1868, and annexed to Jacksonville in 1887. After being destroyed in the Great Fire of 1901, it was quickly rebuilt, and its growth was rapid during the Florida land boom of the 1920s with the development of Avondale. Today, Riverside–Avondale is well known for its architectural diversity and historic character. In the 1980s, it was named a National Register historic district and a few years later a local City of Jacksonville Historic District as well. It includes about eight square miles, and roughly 5,000 contributing historic structures.
