Jacksonville prepared for Lunar New Year

In celebration of the Lunar New Year, Jacksonville’s Vietnamese community will be holding its annual Vietnamese New Year Festival in the middle of this month.

The festival will have the traditional Lion Dance, and will also feature plenty of Vietnamese cuisine offered by street food vendors. Live entertainment and cultural performances will reflect Vietnam’s cultural heritages, as well as those of other Asian countries.

A bingo game will be in progress during the event, and raffle drawings will have a 65-inch LED TV as the grand prize.

There will also be a pho eating competition. Pho is a Vietnamese noodle soup of rice noodles, herbs and either beef or chicken broth. Participants start downing the pho when the starting signal is given. The one who finishes the soup “down to the last drop” first will receive $100.

Special guest will be Britney Chou Nguyen, who is Mrs. Asia International 2016.

While children will have their own talent contest, there will be a fashion show for the ladies. Pictures taken during these activities will likely be used for poster printing.

The festival is slated for Sunday, January 15, at the Jacksonville Fairgrounds, 510 Fairgrounds Pl, Jacksonville. Festivities will start at 11:00 am and will wind down around 8:00 pm. Admission will be $5, and kids under five will get in free. The pho eating contest will be at 1:00 pm and again at 6:00 pm.
