The tires will be spinning in November as the 36th Horrible Hundred Cycling event kicks off at the Waterfront Park Pavilion in Clermont.
This yearly event draws all levels of cyclists, from families craving an adventure, to avid cyclists and racers ready to take on this challenging course. The significance of this ride is conquering the hills, which are rare for the average Floridian. Riders will have the option to choose three courses with distances of 35, 70 and 100 miles. Although the roads are marked for the riders, each rider will receive a map, no doubt provided by a local printing company, to help guide them along the way. All riders will also receive a wristband that grants them access to the sag stops and the post ride meal.
Participants will take in some of the most scenic rural areas in Central Florida. The course maps are designed in such a way that regardless of the distance, cyclists will be able to take breaks when needed and enjoy the sites along the way.
Competitors will likely end their ride struggling to make it up Sugarloaf Mountain, where many convince themselves to walk the bike the rest of the way up this hill. Others, seeing a photographer at the top of the “summit’ ready to take their picture, allow determination to kick in and keep on pedaling.
The event starts on Saturday, November 15 with a Cycling and Fitness Expo featuring local businesses, and continues on Sunday, November 16 when the riders hit the pavement.
