Clermont heads for the Caribbean

The Caribbean American Association of Lake County will hold its Eighth Annual Clermont Jerk Festival in early May. This will be an opportunity for folks to celebrate the area’s local Caribbean/American heritage.

Music will be provided by the Fab 5, Tory Winter, Terry Gajraj, Janelle Nogueras, and the Lake Steel Orchestra. Other performers will include members of the Hammond Academy for the Performing Arts. There will be plenty of reggae and country music and the chance for guests to try out their Spanish.

Local businesses and organizations that focus on Caribbean themes will be on hand selling food, putting up displays, and giving demonstrations depicting their Caribbean cultures.

There will be a jerk cook-off competition, a kids’ zone, games, vendors, face painting, stilt walkers, and an Island Parade. Each local business and organization sponsoring this year’s event has been submitting its Logo Design and advertising to the event organizers before their Jerk Festival brochure printing.

Admission will be $10 for adults and tickets for kids from the ages of 6 to 14 years will be $6. Children under six will not need tickets.

Proceeds from the event will go to scholarships for high school seniors who have Caribbean American backgrounds and to the organization’s Lake Steel Orchestra. The orchestra is a mentoring program fostering discipline and team work.

The Clermont Jerk Festival will be from noon until 10:00 pm on Saturday, May 4 at Waterfront Park, 100 3rd Street.
