Wilmington names street in honor of community leader

The City of Wilmington recently honored a community leader by naming a street in his honor.

Mayor Mike Purzycki and Hanifa Shabazz, president of the City Council, joined other officials, and well as friends and the family of Jea Street, to name a city block after him. The 1000 block of West 6th Street is now ‘Jea P. Street Way’. Occasions like this can be made even more fun if organizers use banner printing to create decorations.

Street served as a member of the New Castle County Council, as well as leading the Hilltop Lutheran Neighborhood Center for 35 years, where the ceremony was held. Mayor Purzycki praised Street's work in the community, saying that no one would have cause to doubt his commitment to the city, and to the thousands of constituents, families, and children he has served during his career. Purzycki went on to list two of Street's most vital qualities—tenacity and consistency – both of which have given him the determination and drive to advocate for residents and their needs.

The Mayor's Executive Order, the official document renaming the street, says Wilmington wants to honor those who have had a meaningful and demonstrable impact on both the residents of the city, and the city itself. It went on to single out Street specifically for his work in making sure all children have access to quality education.
