The Bruce Museum in Greenwich is currently holding an exhibition of private collections belonging to its residents. There are three collections, which include rare Baroque and Italian Renaissance drawings, paintings by Andrew Wyeth, and Chinese ceramics from the Tang Dynasty.
The items belong to Fred and Jane Brooks, who started their collection of Chinese ceramics while on a trip to Hong Kong in 1992. According to Fred, they had been living in another house in Greenwich at the time, where there was a wood panel between the kitchen and dining room and they needed a piece to display there. They saw a Tang horse and knew nothing of the period but it had the “right credentials”, so they thought it would look good in that location.
Since then, they have collected more than 40 pieces from the time period of 618 to 907 AD and will be donating their entire haul to the museum.
Fred has said that by doing this, they hope that the museum will become more of a destination offering and people will come from all over. In addition, this will provide the opportunity for the museum to have a collection that it can swap out or trade with other museums, so they will be more likely to lend their good collections to the Bruce.
The collections will be on display until August 31. Poster printing is one way the museum can promote this exhibit and similar events.
