A plan is in the pre-application stage to convert a country estate in Greenwich into a non-profit center for learning, focused on art, wellness, health, and social justice.
The plan was put forth by Foundation House, LLC and is currently being reviewed by the Planning and Zoning Commission.
Thomas Heagney, an attorney, said that the property covers 75 acres and includes a mansion once owned by actor and director Mel Gibson. The Merritt Parkway is on the south side of the property and Old Mill Road is on the north side.
The existing mansion and outbuildings would be kept as part of the plan. There would be construction of a new conference center, and workshops, lectures, and other types of gatherings will be held at the new center. Topics to be covered include social justice, community building, farm-to-table nutrition, and historic preservation. There are horse trails on the property which would be restored and made available to the public. The grist mill on the east side of the property would be kept as well. Such plans often turn to printing services to make them available to the community for review.
A “Glass Barn” will also be built to accommodate 300 people for philanthropic or private functions. Another structure, called the “Log Cabin,” will be constructed for spiritual wellness retreats or yoga and will hold up to 15 guests.
