New head of human services selected in Greenwich

A new commissioner will be heading up the Department of Human Services in Greenwich later this month.

Demetria Nelson will become the new commissioner. Fred Camillo, First Selectman, said that he is looking forward to working with Nelson as the needs of the most vulnerable in the community are to be continually addressed and served.

Camillo expressed his confidence in Nelson’s ability to lead the department in ensuring that residents are provided with critical services. Alan Gunzburg, Board Chair, echoed his confidence in Nelson to be able to provide the vision and leadership needed by the department for the future.

Announcements of such appointments are often made known throughout a community with poster printing.

Nelson has been working in addiction treatment services for the BronxCare Health System as administrative assistant since 2016, overseeing one TCE-HIV program funded by a grant and five addiction treatment programs. She worked for the department in Greenwich from 2002 to 2004 as a caseworker.

The Strategy Group, LLC of Darien was hired to assist the search committee five months ago to conduct the search for the replacement of Dr. Alan Barry, who decided to retire after 10 years in the department. Gunzberg said that many comments the committee received regarding Nelson described her as genuine, kind, and hardworking.

Nelson will start her new position on Monday, August 24.
