Asnuntuck Community College in Enfield will host a virtual guitar STEM course for educators.
STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. The STEM Guitar courses by the National Science Foundation, teaches educators a curriculum that center on designing and building a guitar. It is geared toward the professional development of college professors and high school teachers. The class at Asnuntuck Community College, located at 170 Elm Street, is the Electric Guitar Institute.
Over the course of five days, educators will participate in a rigorous student centered curriculum where they will build an original guitar. The build requires knowledge of specific STEM topics. At the end of the five days, educators will have lessons, quizzes, and a guitar to add to their lesson plans. The Foundation offers 80 hours of additional instructional resources. Printing services often create materials for educational courses.
The National Science Foundation provides the resources for the Advanced Technology Education Centers, which runs the STEM seminar across the nation. The NSF also pays for the tuition of selected applicants and a stipend for educators to attend.
The seminar has become more influential than the Foundation initially expected due to its popularity and having been shared at conferences. In the past decade, more than 20,000 students have had exposure to the unique curriculum.
The seminar will take place from July 20 to July 24, 8am-4pm each day.
