Petting zoo brings patrons to museum

Last month, Kristen Letsch set up a petting zoo at the Enfield Historical Society Museum for local children using animals from her Monroe farm. Guests included goats named Sprouts and Cabra, Molly the sheep, ducks, chickens, guinea pigs, and rabbits.

The petting zoo gave patrons with children a chance to visit the museum and soak up the town's history. Many of the exhibits had artifacts from local businesses such as Bigelow Sanford Carpet, the Hazard Powder Company, and a branch of Sage-Allen.

Susan Thrope and her granddaughter Jenna spent the day on the top floor with the historical items commonly associated with women. The display includes clothing, artwork, and machines. Jenna, who is the youngest docent at the museum at the age of 11, explained to patrons how the spinning wheel pops during use and inspired the song ‘Pop! Goes the Weasel’.

Letsch, who has been around animals her entire life, plans to bring riding ponies to the museum in September. She started out offering pony rides 25 years ago before incorporating more species into the event. Letsch also said she will buy an Indian miniature zebu for the petting zoo in the future.

Several museums have gift shops or offer souvenirs to patrons such as Mugs, shirts, and bookmarks. They often have the logo of the museum and a historic photo or picture of an artifact. A printing company could make these souvenirs.
