Local library has no plans to lose its marbles

Even for those who don’t know the difference between a cats-eye and an agate, attending a couple of evenings of marble mania this month is likely to be something to remember.

In just a couple of weeks, The Pearl Street Branch Library in Enfield will be hosting a marble practice session one evening and a tournament three days later.

The tournament will have five divisions incorporating different age groups. Each division will comprise eight people, and everyone is invited to watch and learn about this popular and longstanding hobby.

A ‘Pointers and Practice’ session will be available for those who wish to test their marble skills against other entrants. Tournament participants can practice with 1963 National Marbles Champion, Jim Donohue. After this, everyone is invited to attend a program about the history of marbles, presented by Robert Block, who has written a number of Books on the subject. No registration is required for either night.

Since many marbles are unique and colorful, they can make for interesting subjects for poster and postcard printing, as anybody with an interest in photography or printed media will be aware.

The tournament will be on July 19, at the Pearl Street Branch Library, 159 Pearl St. Enfield, starting at 9:00 am. The Pointers and Practice session will be held July 16, starting at 5:30 pm. Block’s presentation will begin at 7:00 pm.
