Library director announces retirement

After 16 years as director of the Enfield libraries in Connecticut, Henry Dutcher proudly retired on October 24, 2015.

Ducher's career began as a student worker at the New York State University library, which would take him to the University of Texas, and finally to Enfield. He leaves behind a legacy of the two small town libraries serving his community by providing a focal point for the youth to learn more about the world, and to participate in enriching activities that instill a lifetime desire to learn.

Some of the most memorable events he helped manage include a Treasure Island summer reading event in which more than 70 schoolchildren dug holes looking for treasure in the library's front lawn. Another was when the library invited astronaut Story Musgrave as a speaker.

During the Great Recession, his library staff were instrumental in assisting prospective employees with their job searches. Even college graduates have come home to Enfield to visit or work at Dutcher's libraries.

He lives in Charlestown, RI, where he pursues his hobby of gardening.

If the library wanted to throw him a retirement party, it could hire a banner printing company to make a piece to put outside the library. It could have Books and a golden watch on it, saying ‘Happy Retirement Henry Dutcher’ or ‘We Will Miss You'.
