The American Association for Petroleum Geologists Foundation has named Susan Boucher, an earth science teacher at Enfield High School, the eastern United States top teacher for 2015.
As a teacher of freshman only, Boucher stated that she sees a lot of energy in her students who are starting to find their identity. When they get onto something, they are motivated to work hard.
Boucher relies on hands-on learning and activity in the classroom. She also believes in group activities and said that learning happens when students are doing projects. Her freshman students, who were learning about crystals, were tasked with taking a process of engineering design and figuring out the best way to make candy. For homework, the students were to make candy at home using the method they came up with. It helped them learn about different types of crystals and how they form. Students told Boucher that they enjoyed the lesson, despite it being challenging.
Having been named regional teacher of the year last month, she had the potential to be national teacher of the year where she received an honorable mention. Boucher stated that it was a great honor for the nomination, because it meant her portfolio stood out among a group of geologists.
The school could hire a banner printing company and surprise Boucher with a congratulatory item in the hallway near her classroom.
