Enfield sportsman given state recognition

Enfield native Alex Zachary is one of two college athletes the Connecticut Sports Writers' Alliance has named among its Athletes of the Year for 2017.

Zachary is an alumnus of Enrico Fermi High School Class of 2013 and currently plays baseball for Eastern Connecticut State University. This year, he made the All-American Division III first team, having been selected for the third team last year. Zachary also gained the titles of Little East Conference Player of the Year and the New England Player of the Year. In 37 games, he made 61 hits, 42 runs, 9 home runs, and batted .404. Out of his 29 attempts to steal bases, he made it 25 times. Nearly 20 of his game were multiple hitters and in only one did he not reach the base. After two years as a Warrior, he has scored 120 hits, 78 runs, 19 home runs, 36 bases stolen, and batted .388 with a .686 slugging percent.

On April 29, the Southington Aqua Turf Club will host the Gold Key Dinner for the 77th year, which will recognize Zachary and the other 2017 Athlete of the Year winner. Reservations for the dinner are $75. Proceeds from the dinner will go toward the Bo Kolinsky Journalism Scholarship.

Universities of selected athletes often have congratulatory Banners designed, printed, and displayed in the athletic departments.
