Enfield school retains Teacher of the Year crown

Connie Mazzetta, a behavior analyst for the district who teaches special education at Hazardville Memorial School, has been named Enfield's Teacher of the Year, meaning that the school has claimed the award for the second year in a row.

Jim Graham, the principal of the school, was the person who nominated her. He praised the 53-year-old for being a “solid teacher” and having an impact on a number of children.

Mazzetta floats to several classrooms throughout the day to work with about 30 students with special needs and their teachers, most of whom are in preschool. A big part of her job is bridging gaps for students who have trouble communicating their needs.

In an interview with the Hartford Courant, Mazzetta stated that she loves seeing her students grow throughout their school years and appreciates the diversity of kids she works with. When tutoring teachers on interacting with their students, she has to develop a trusting relationship with them rather than simply telling them what they are doing wrong.

Sarah Collins, chairwoman for the teacher of the year committee, said seven teachers were up for the award. Mazzetta is now up for Teacher of the Year for the state.

Hazardville Memorial School might consider having a banner printing company make a banner honoring Mazzetta for her June 22 award. If she wins Connecticut Teacher of the Year, the school could have another banner made.
