Enfield's Tom Owens is one of six winners of the 2017 John Wentworth Good Sport Award by the Connecticut Sports Writers' Alliance.
The 76th Gold Key Dinner will recognize the winners at the Southington's Aqua Turf Club on April 30th starting at 4pm. Other winners include Hamden's Rich Leonardo, Granby's Case Skrubis, Middletown's Tom D'Aquila, Derby's Ed Morse, and Newtown's Curtis Urbina. These gentlemen have given their efforts to better their communities with the help of athletics which qualifies them for the award.
Tickets are $75 each and are obtainable through The Hartford Courant, Patch Media, and the Connecticut Sports Writers' Alliance. The admission price goes toward the Bohdan Kolinsky Memorial Sports Journalism Scholarship through the Alliance.
Owens has volunteered his time for Enfield youth sports for almost 40 years. He started out coaching the Thompsonville Little League and was part of the board of directors for Little League which included instructional, major, minor, and senior teams. He was the organization's president for a decade before creating Enfield's Babe Ruth team. His team won the 1989 state championship. Today, he and his son command the senior division team for the Enfield American Legion.
