Enfield program initiators go for gold

On May 27, residents of Enfield involved in the Head Start program held a celebration for its gold anniversary.

Head Start is set up for students under five years of age and their parents, and aims to promote education and health starting at a young age.

According to Debbie Clement, director of Head Start, the program started in 1965 as a trial lasting two months. It has since become a full time program, helping more than 30 million students and offering family services. Head Start in Enfield began on a half-day basis with two classes in late 1978. The program relocated to the Elijah Churchhill Enfield Head Start School in 2003. Today, 140 students are in the program and two thirds of the classes in Enfield are full time.

Head Start students and the Enfield High School marching take part in a parade during the ceremony. Several individuals gave speeches, including the Mayor and Enfield High School student Abigail Bosco, who participated in the program when she was a child. Bosco stated that the program was a major building block for her education. She is on the student council and high honor roll.
