Enfield PD introduces new narcotics dog

Enfield K-9 Officer Promise is retiring after nearly a decade on the force. Her replacement, Putnam, is two years old and a Labrador, like Promise.

Promise is now 10 years old and has had Brian Croteau as her partner throughout her service. According to Croteau, the dogs act their age. Promise is more relaxed, while young Putnam is playful and full of energy, but Croteau notes that the two dogs training together has brought out more youthful playfulness in the older canine. Both dogs had previous training at Guiding Eyes in Putnam, New York, which is how the new dog got his name.

Putnam is learning obedience and dealing with physical hindrances. At the end of the month, he will spend a month in Meriden with K-9 trainers of the state. Then, Putnam will spend nine weeks training at home, earning food when he unearths drugs.

Promise will spend her senior years with Croteau and his family, and will live like any other family dog. The transition may take time but the family's two kids can keep her occupied. Croteau admitted that he will miss going to work with Promise, but is happy he can see her at home.

The department could sell Calendars or Holiday Cards with its new K-9 officers as a fundraiser for the force or for charity.
