After the renovations are finished on Enfield High School, it will combine with Enrico Fermi High School, but the sports programs for both schools may consolidate following an Enfield Board of Education meeting on August 26.
There has already been an attempt to combine the programs this year, but it was turned down by the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference. This merger would have given the program additional lacrosse teams for boys and girls, as well as sports available to freshmen.
Jeffery Schumann, superintendent of Enfield schools, has suggested that the district should send in its proposal early.
At the meeting, several board members spoke openly about their decision to deny the proposal. Tina LeBlanc stated that transportation and the location at which the students will practice are problems that need to be addressed first, while Peter Jonaitis thought about how an early merge would affect school pride. Raymond Peabody wanted input from those involved in high school sports, and Timothy Neville agreed on combining the sports teams early, but wanted parents, students, and staff to be suitably informed on what the merger would entail.
In keeping with Neville’s suggestion, it may be beneficial for the district to form a partnership with a professional printing company so that those most affected by the change are kept in the know through media like Flyers and Brochures.
