Cookie donation event comes to the crunch

On November 29, Enfield's Cookies for Camouflage received more than 900lb of cookies at the American Legion Post 80. Hartford homeless shelter South Park Inn will claim 18lb of this, while the rest will be given to local military community members who will not be home for the holidays.

This is the fifth year of the event, which was started by Lori Gates of Enfield and her website Enfield Hooah, which advocates for the armed forces. The site was inspired by her husband, who spent 24 years in the military, retired as a first sergeant, and has a family tradition of military service. He passed away a few months ago, so Gates wanted to make this year's donation drive a success in his honor.

Each year, Cookies for Camouflage has received more donations than the last. Residents donated 902lb of cookies last year, which was just one pound short of this year's total donations. Gates stated that the event was fast-paced and exciting, and she is happy that her community helped so much. For example, Enfield resident Sue Fluckiger donated thousands of cookies.

Printing companies in the area can donate printed greeting cards to go with the cookies with a special message to the troops. People will remember the message and be reminded of the company that wrote the message.
