April Veteran of the Month recognized

An Enfield resident has been presented with April's Veteran of the Month award.

Kevin Witkos, Connecticut Senate Minority Leader Pro Tempore, presented 92-year-old Ernie Maynard with the award.

Born in Scitico, Maynard joined the United States Army at the age of 19 where he worked in communications and radio and telephone operation. He served in WWII as a Mess Sergeant, and went on to search enemy buildings for American equipment. After the war, he became a carpenter but ended up going back into the army for the Korean War.

Throughout his military career, he has earned the WWII Victory Medal, WWII NCO Association Remembrance Medal, four stars with the European Theater of Operations, the American Campaign Medal, three stars with the Korean War Service Medal, the Korean Ambassador for Peace Medal, and several other commendations.

He has been a volunteer for several groups and acted as the Fire Commissioner. Witkos gave Maynard high praise, saying he defines leadership with his long military service and dedication to the community, state, and country.

Veteran of the Month recognizes Connecticut veterans by telling their unique stories and decorations with articles and a video. Witko, who created the program, could make Veteran of the Month promotional Drinkware for winners, similar to the Mugs that say ‘World's Greatest Dad’ but with a theme more relevant to their achievements.
