Westminster officials review water utilities

Westminster has kicked off a project that aims to streamline public utility systems.

It started with a virtual meeting on October 8, with the next ones scheduled for November 3 and 17. The purpose of these meetings is to give the residents and councilors more information on the state of Westminster’s sewer and water utilities before discussing whether the water rates will be increased.

All of the meetings will be virtual. The meetings will follow the same format the council has been using for all of its online meetings. The councilors will be logged in using a video messaging tool while residents can log in to watch.

Max Kirschbaum, the Director for Public Works, said:

“In the first meeting, what will be discussed is really the current state of the water and sewer infrastructure so everyone can have a good baseline understanding of where we are, what our needs are.”

The meetings are being led by Heather Bergman from Peak Facilitation Group. The first meeting included an overview of how to incorporate community discussions into the next meeting. Memos with the important details from meetings can be circulated on documents with official Letterheads.

The last time an increase in water rates was proposed was in 2018. At that meeting, the councilors decided to increase the water rates by about 10% in 2020, which was at the maximum end of the 6-10% increase bracket originally set. These price increments were justified by the need for funds to maintain and repair the city’s aging water supply systems.
