Westminster company secures NASA contract

Westminster-based Maxar Technologies has won a contract from NASA for up to $375m to work on a space station, and a project to put astronauts on the moon again.

Dan Jablonsky from Maxar stated:

“We are building space infrastructure, not just a one-and-done kind of moonshot, but actual infrastructure that will build a sustainable platform for lunar exploration as well as deep space exploration and beyond that.”

This marks the first serious attempt to return to the moon in 47 years. Maxar was able to win this contract because it already has an operational solar array that is three times more powerful than any other similar system. This power source enables spacecraft to maneuver efficiently and change direction with ease.

Jablonsky went on to state:

“The power propulsion element…is the very first element that will go up there that is designed to provide propulsion as well as power and communications capabilities for the mission.”

The Gateway Space Station will orbit moon. From there, secondary attached modules will be used as long-term habitation modules for astronauts on their way to the moon. Landers will ferry the astronauts to the moon’s surface and back.

Maxar Technologies will be the owner and operator of Gateway until it is proven to be successful which is when NASA will take the reins. The goal is to have astronauts back on the surface of the moon by 2024 – a boast that might well make its way onto company Letterheads.
