A golden start
Westminster, Colorado, might be said to have been founded on gold, as it was the discovery of the precious metal in 1858 in the South Platte River Valley that drew attention to the region. Gold fever, coupled with the Land Act of 1862, encouraged settlers on their way to California to stay in Colorado instead.
Pleasant DeSpain was the first European who settled in the area permanently, building a house near what today is Lowell Street and West 76th Avenue in 1870. Others began moving in, including Edward Bruce Bowles, whose influence helped build the community's railroad depot, constructed in 1881. Ten years later, construction started on Westminster Castle, which is still extant. For a time, the town was named Harris, after C.J. Harris, a real estate developer from Connecticut, but in 1911 the name was changed and the town was incorporated as Westminster, to honor Westminster University.
