The Arvada Center in the Westminster area is hosting a production of the play Misery this fall.
The script is by the Academy Award-winning screenwriter William Goldman, adapted from the novel of the same name by Stephen King.
It centers on a best-selling author, Paul Sheldon, who awakens after a car accident to the seeming care of a bystander, until things take a dark turn.
Enter Annie Wilkes, the unhinged “No. 1 fan” of Paul, who takes after him after the accident. However, things aren’t what they seem underneath that sweet demeanor after Annie demands the ending to Paul’s latest book is rewritten.
The cat-mouse chase of mental games begins as Paul struggles for survival and Annie asserts absolute control.
The film won the actress who portrayed Annie Wilkes, Kathy Bates, an Academy Award for her role, and further cemented James Caan, who portrayed Paul Sheldon, as a leading man.
For The Arvada Center’s rendition of the play, Brian Mallgrave, the scenic designer for Misery, had to transform the venue’s Main Stage Theatre into an isolated cabin in the remote forest.
