Developers win bid to rezone land

A development at Shaw Heights is set to move forward after gaining approval to change land use definitions from the Westminster City Council.

Oread Capital, the project’s developers, plan to keep working on this development, which hopes to bring 2350 housing units to 235 acres of land that surrounds the iconic castle called the Pillar of Fire Church. The Mayor stated that the council may review it again in the future. He went on to say:

“This has been a huge process for an application that is only at step one. What has been committed to verbally by the applicant, we have checkpoints along the way on each one of to make sure what they have told us all publically at the Planning Commission and here tonight are being live up to.”

At the public hearings, more than 40 people were heard. 14 were in favor and 28 in opposition. Councilors said that making the decision was hard and they will be keeping an eye on the project’s proposal as it continues in the review process.

The land where Oread wishes to build is owned at present by the Pillar of Fire Church. Oread officials believe the project will take a total of seven years to finish and will have a mixture of housing units, commercial areas, and parks. In order to proceed, they needed to rezone three parcels of land so that they can build five units per acre rather than three. Developers often use brochure printing at the beginning of a project to promote it.
