The Chicago connection
Longmont has an unusual origin. Its founders were a group of businessmen from Chicago who, in 1870, decided to establish a town in Colorado. They called the endeavor “The Chicago-Colorado Colony” and sold memberships in the enterprise. They chose a site with care and paid for 60,000 acres with the money raised by selling memberships. The Chicago businessmen brought building materials, lumber, and most importantly, people, to the area, and built a new community, finishing it in 1871. They called the town “Longmont,” taking the name from a nearby mountain, Long’s Peak.
With this background, Longmont has always been keen on preserving its historic buildings. Residents and others who are interested in protecting structures of geographical, architectural or historic interest work with the Landmark Designation Commission. Records of the city’s growth are maintained in the Longmont Archives, which are part of the Longmont Museum. Local economy
