Vallejo to name street after local hip-hop singer

The City Council of Vallejo has decided to honor E-40, a legend in Northern California, by naming a street after him in a neighborhood in which he grew up.

Magazine Street, which shares its name with the title of a song written by E-40 in 2015, will be soon called “E-40 Way.” Announcements of such important changes in a city are often made known to the community with flyer printing.

E-40’s first album, “Federal,” was released in November 1993 and helped to make his name known in the genre of hip-hop. Since then, E-40, whose real name is Earl Stevens, has become an influential name in the genre.

In May, Grambling State University (GSU) in Louisiana, of which he was a graduate, bestowed upon him an honorary doctorate degree. At the graduation ceremony at GSU, E-40 offered words of encouragement and wisdom to the class that was graduating. The 55-year-old has donated $100,000 to GSU to support the marching band of the historically Black college and the building of a recording studio, which was named for him.

E-40 was born and raised in Vallejo. Other rap icons for whom streets have been named in in the Bay Area include 2Pac and Too $hort.

The city is planning to inaugurate the new street name sometime in November to celebrate E-40’s three decades in the music industry.
