New principals appointed to Vallejo elementary schools

Two new elementary school principals for the 2026-2027 school year have been appointed in the Vallejo City Unified School District. Mary Claire Gatmaitan-Delgado will be the principal at Wardlaw Elementary School and Anita Summerlin will head Cooper Elementary School.

Gatmaitan-Delgado has more than 20 years of experience in public education, having served as a bilingual instructor, teacher, leader of human resources, assistant principal, and principal designee. She offers extensive expertise in multilingual learner success, equitable instructional systems, and special education, with a strong focus on high-quality teaching and inclusive practices and is committed to building strong relationships and high expectations for all students.

Summerlin brings more than 22 years of experience in education, having served as a principal, assistant principal, instructional coach, and teacher in the Bay Area. She most recently taught in Alexandria City Public Schools in Virginia.

Summerlin has been a social worker and brings a compassionate approach focused on relationships to leadership. She is committed to creating inclusive and safe environments that are academically rigorous where every student feels supported, valued, and empowered to succeed.

Superintendent Rubén Aurelio expressed his excitement about welcoming these new principals to the district. He added that both bring a deep commitment to students, a wealth of experience, and a strong vision for supporting the school communities.
