A new homeless shelter with 125 beds is now open in Vallejo.
The shelter is on Broadway Street and is designed to be the one place where people who are homeless can stay up to six months and receive case management that will enable them to have access to medical and social services. Job training will also be available to residents as well as assistance in finding permanent housing. Residents will receive three meals a day. The center also provides help with substance abuse, a computer lab, and wound care.
Poster printing can be used around town so the homeless will know where they can go for such housing and services.
Gillian Haen, Assistant City Manager, thanked many people for their efforts in building this shelter. She highlighted Scott Foster, a businessman, who sold the property to the city in 2022 for $950,000 and Maria Guevara, founder and advocate for the shelter.
The cost for the shelter was $12 million, funding for which was made available through Solano County and federal grants and the three hospital systems in the area which collectively gave $6.2 million for operations. Five Keys, a non-profit organization that offers housing services and adult education in Alameda County and San Francisco, will be running the shelter.
The shelter will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. There will be three care coordinators who will oversee the social cases of the guests.
