An apartment complex under construction on Sacramento Street in Vallejo will be created from modules measuring 70 feet in length.
The manufacturer of these blocks is Factory OS, a company that produces them at what was once a ship repair facility from World War II at the former Mare Island Naval Shipyard. This is the first housing project in Vallejo to be built with these modules, although the company started operations in 2017 and has built over 1,500 modules since then.
When completed, there will be 75 units of long-term affordable housing. The units will consist of five apartments with two bedrooms, 18 with one bedroom, and 51 studios. There will be two buildings connected by an aerial bridge that will cross a landscaped plaza. Also part of the project will be a unit for the property manager, offices with supportive social and health services, and a community meeting room. Other amenities will include a play area, orchard, a dog run, a community garden, and patios. Such features and amenities are often highlighted with brochure printing to attract residents.
James E. Roberts-Obayashi Corp. with headquarters in Danville, is the general contractor. Fletcher Studio of San Francisco and David Baker Architects are the building designers. The latter has offices in Birmingham, Alabama, as well as ones elsewhere in California in Oakland and San Francisco. Eden Housing, a developer of multi-family affordable housing based in Hayward, is partnering on this project.
