Affordable housing to come to Vallejo area

Ground has been broken on new affordable housing for seniors by the East Bay Asian Local Development Corporation in Oakland. This may be of some interest to these residents of nearby Vallejo.

The housing will have 96 units and be a Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) project near the Lake Merritt BART station in Chinatown. This is phase one of a larger project that is part of the Area Plan for the Lake Merritt BART Station that will include a childcare facility, public recreation areas, retail establishments, 460 additional planned homes, and improvements for cyclists and pedestrians to connect Chinatown to other neighborhoods.

Banner printing is often used at such sites to inform residents and those of neighboring communities of such important projects.

The 96 units will have 44 units that will be reserved for those who have been homeless in the past. This new housing helps to address the issues caused by the public infrastructure and freeway projects of the 1950s and 1960s that affected Oakland’s Chinatown area. Oakland City Council President, Nikki Fortunato Bas, said that this project represents the work of many years of advocacy by the community to make the best use of public land.

The project is funded in part by a loan of $3m from the Bay Area Housing Finance Authority, and another loan of $1.86m from the Measure U Affordable Housing and Infrastructure Bond of Oakland.

This project is scheduled to open for occupancy by Summer 2026.
