Work set to begin on symphony venue

Construction should begin soon on an additional venue for the San Diego Symphony.

The Board of Port Commissioners for the Port of San Diego recently gave the San Diego Symphony Orchestra Association a lease for its proposed Bayside Performance Park. The project is a major step in the orchestra's plans to add a permanent performance venue to the waterfront.

The project is described as a “park within a park,” and will include a new performance space for the symphony. In addition, improvements are planned to Embarcadero Marina Park South, which is owned by the port and is located behind the San Diego Convention Center.

According to the port commissioners' board chairman, Garry Bonelli, the symphony plans to invest at least $45m in the project, including better performance facilities as well as public amenities. The new performance space will be available year around, and is expected to become a major attraction on the waterfront. The concert space will have a state-of-the-art sound system and stage, and the surrounding park will be improved so that people who come to the park simply to enjoy being there, and not necessarily for music, will also have a good experience. The design of the stage will complement that of the Convention Center, and will include a set of sunset steps behind the stage, where people can sit during non-event hours.
