A cheerful musical performance is on the way to downtown San Diego.
Mariachi Champaña Nevin is a unique group. Trumpeter and composer Jeff Nevin is the group’s leader, and the musicians are virtuoso classical and mariachi artists who have teamed up to create what is described as “classical mariachi music.” The ensemble fully incorporates the ideals of both the Classical music of Europe, and the traditional music of Mexico. The group has performed across both Mexico and the United States, and has entertained audiences as far and wide as Turkmenistan, South Korea, and Russia.
Nevin has composed works for both symphony orchestras and mariachi bands, and is the composer of the first ever “Concerto for Mariachi and Orchestra” (“Pasión Mexicana”); a classical song cycle taken from the works of poet Alberto Blanco, written for orchestra and mariachi and titled “Al Aire Libre”; and a celebration of Christmas in Mexico titled “La fiesta de la Nochebuena.”
As a soloist or with his group, Nevin has appeared with ensembles including the San Diego Symphony, and has worked with artists like Placido Domingo, Florencia Tinoco, and José Luis Duval.
Mariachi Champaña Nevin will appear at the Balboa Theatre in downtown San Diego on Friday, July 17. When they offer performances like this, organizers can work with brochure printers to create programs, as audiences enjoy learning about the performers and may keep the programs as souvenirs.
