A band recognized as being strongly associated with the development of indie rock is coming to downtown San Diego’s PETCO Park.
Death Cab for Cutie first got together in Bellingham, Washington, in 1997, with founding members Ben Gibbard as lead singer, drummer Nathan Good, bassist Nick Harmer, and guitarist Chris Walla. Jason McGerr and Michael Schorr joined the group later.
The group got off to a rough start. They created “Something About Airplanes,” their 1998 debut album, in a bungalow they were renting in Bellingham. The entire existence of the group at the time was a DIY effort. Walla designed T-Shirts as well as handling the recording, and Harmer’s mother lent them a loan for their first van so they would be able to tour. Every cent they made went to pay for gas to get to the next gig.
It paid off. They released “Transatlanticism” in 2003, and watched it chart on the Billboard 200. As their fame began to grow, they attracted attention from established stars like Pearl Jam, for whom they opened in 2004. However, it wasn’t until 2005 that they broke into the mainstream with their album “Plans,” their first on a major label. They have continued recording and released their latest album, “I Built You a Tower,” in 2026.
Death Cab for Cutie will be at Gallagher Square at PETCO Park on August 4. Using poster printing, organizers of shows like this can ensure they are publicized.
