A singer/songwriter from England who fronted the legendary band The Smiths is on the way to San Diego.
Steven Patrick Morrissey, who goes by his last name, developed a love of 1960s pop music, kitchen sing realism, and literature when he was a child. Morrissey wanted to write professionally but was equally interested in music.
In 1978 he met Johnny Marr at a Patti Smith concert. In 1982, Marr, impressed by Morrissey’s book “The New York Dolls” about the rock band, tracked Morrissey down at home and asked if he wanted to co-found a band. Morrissey agreed and chose the name The Smiths to appeal to ordinary people. The other members of the original lineup were Mike Joyce and Andy Rourke.
The Smiths are regarded as one of the most influential bands in music. Music journalist Simon Reynolds said The Smiths’ mixed pop, rock, strength, sensitivity, tenderness, and defiance, into a sound that was completely original. Numerous groups cite The Smiths as an influence.
Morrissey went solo successfully in 1987. He has recorded 15 albums and released 13 of them thus far. He has also received awards and nominations including a Grammy nomination and an Ivor Novello Award.
Morrissey will be at the San Diego Civic Theatre in the heart of downtown on January 6. This type of event benefits from advertisements that organizers can create using poster printing.
