Southern Rock founders coming to San Diego
A band widely credited with helping to create the Southern Rock genre is on the way to San Diego.
The Marshall Tucker Band, which has never actually had a member named Marshall Tucker, formed in Spartanburg, South Carolina, in 1972, comprising musicians who had been playing in other bands around the area. Doug Gray was one of these artists, and the only original member who is still with the group. Although the Marshall Tucker Band was most successful in the 1970s, it has been active performing and recording, with a changing line-up, for 50 years.
In 1973, the group released their debut “The Marshall Tucker Band” on Capricorn Records, and had the satisfaction of seeing it certified Gold by the RIAA in 1975. Following the release of their initial effort, the started touring, maintaining a grueling scheduled of approximately 300 shows annually throughout the 1970s.
