What's Happening in San Diego - Downtown, CA…

Second opera company forming in San Diego

Last year, the San Diego Opera closed abruptly. Today it is back in business, and even more intriguingly, a second opera company is forming.

Former employees of the San Diego Opera have split off to form San Diego City Opera (SDCO), which will begin its season in October. The new opera company is led by Cory Hibbs - who has a PhD from Peabody Conservatory and teaches music at San Diego State University - and Cynthia Stokes - who has staged operas in many different venues. As the company plans to perform in non-traditional locales, her expertise will no doubt be vital.

Opera companies across the country and around the world have been losing their audiences, but SDCO plans to reach out to a younger demographic with works by modern composers, played in interesting and unusual local venues.

San Diego City Opera will present ‘Dido & Aeneas’ on October 9 through to the 11, 2015, on the UCSD campus, where it will be part of the ‘Without Walls Festival’ of the La Jolla Playhouse.

From December 11 through 13, Opera group will present ‘Andree Expedition’, an operatic version of Dominick Argento's song cycle. The company will stage that production at Bread & Salt, an art gallery in Barrio Logan. The company’s final production of its inaugural season will be Robert X. Rodriguez's ‘La Curandera’.

SDCO could work with brochure printers to create a pamphlet to place in racks around the city, announcing the shows and schedule.
