San Diegos South Park neighborhood welcomes new Target store

Target is about to open a new location in San Diego, but the new store, which is near Fern and Grape streets, will not carry a number of items commonly found in the well-known store.

This smaller store, known as a Target Express, has taken over an old Safeway store that was once also a Gala Foods, and has about 19,000 square feet of space.

According to Jenna Gumto, who works in a children’s boutique known as So Childish, the new store will not sell toys, and its selection of clothing will be much smaller than usually found in the large Target stores. In addition, there will be no Starbucks inside the store. Instead, Captain Kirk’s, a popular local coffee cart, will remain in place in the parking lot.

South Park has a large number of “mom and pop” shops, and Target wants to be a good neighbor. Gumto says that in order to accomplish this, Target is making changes specifically for this neighborhood. Although some merchants have expressed concern, many welcome the new addition, especially since foot traffic in the area falls off in mid-afternoon. They hope the new Target will increase business for everyone.

Target management could celebrate their opening by working with a banner printing company to create an opening day banner for the store. Opening is set for later this month.
