Plans for a San Diego university to build a stadium and satellite campus are progressing, even though the school is still in negotiations to buy the property.
San Diego State University (SDSU) recently announced Clark Construction Group has won a $166.5m contract to develop the site. This means Clark will build the infrastructure, as well as grading the site and doing any engineering necessary. Earlier this year, the company was chosen to build SDSU's football stadium in Mission Valley, and plans to work with Gensler, the architect, on the arena's design.
The university announced its selection of Clark even as it continues its efforts to buy the Mission Valley site, so that it can get the stadium finished before the 2022 college football season. Voters approved Measure G last year, which directs city officials to negotiate with the school for its purchase of the land.
The university plans to redevelop the 132-acre site to include the stadium, which seats 35,000; along with two hotels offering 400 rooms in total; 95,000 square feet for retail; 1.6 million square feet for office use; 4,500 market-rate and faculty housing units; and 89 acres of open space and parks. The first thing the school will build is the stadium, along with a 34-acre park along with river, before it begins any other construction.
