The Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina may have revamped its public areas and guest rooms in a multimillion-dollar project five years ago, but the hotel is now planning more renovations, this time to its meeting and event areas.
Plans call for the construction of a new two-level stacked ballroom, as well as renovations to Marina Terrace, which is located on the bay.
The meeting area will have a video wall with 16 screens, plus design elements such as a Swarovski crystal installation on the ceiling, to blend luxurious design with the latest technology. The makeover carries a price tag of about $107m. According to Tuni Kyi, the hotel's general manager, the redesign is being carried out in response to visitors' demands.
The construction will enlarge the indoor, meeting, and outdoor event spaces to 280,000 square feet. Two ballrooms, each comprising 36,000 square feet, will be able to accommodate 3,700 guests apiece. Both ballrooms have foyers that cover as much as 25,000 square feet, allowing the space to be extended. Also, as part of the makeover, the Marina Terrace will be completed, and will offer a 27,000 square foot paved area for outdoor events.
The new building is designed in blue glass, which evokes the sea. The lead designer, Patricia Richey, says the intent is to capture a sense of movement and fluidity throughout the structure.
