Race for Cabrillo Monument coming up

A race to raise funds for a popular San Diego historical site is on the way.

The Cabrillo Sunset 5K 2020 Fun Run & Walk will help support programs at Cabrillo National Monument that are currently underfunded. The park is at the southern end of San Diego's Point Loma Peninsula, and commemorates Juan Diego Cabrillo's landing at San Diego Bay in 1542.

The route of this year's race takes participants past the most important landmarks in the park before joining the road that leads to tide pools at the water's edge below the park. Runners and walkers will be able to watch the sunset from the beach.

Although the entire route is paved, the return is a challenging climb with a 200-foot gain in elevation as runners return to the Visitors Center. Those who finish first in the Men's and Women's divisions are automatically qualified to take part in the Americas Finest City (AFC) Half Marathon.

The event is for members of the whole family, and people can choose to run or walk, or simply cheer for others; even baby strollers are allowed. Everyone who is a registered participating will be given a T-shirt commemorating the event, and a numbered bib.

The Cabrillo Sunset 5K is scheduled for Jul 25, from 6.30 pm until 8.30 pm. Banner printing can be used to provide course markers for events like this, as they stand up to outdoor use.
