Even though in-person concerts are not on the schedule at the moment, organizers have found a way to share the Spreckels Organ with everyone.
Raúl Prieto Ramírez is the San Diego Civic Organist, and since the middle of March 2020, he and Dale Sorenson, the Spreckels Organ Creator, have been creating a series of webcasts. The two will produce a webcast each week directly from the Spreckels Organ, which is the largest outdoor musical instrument in the world.
Spaniard Ramirez was appointed to the post of Civil Organist in 2018, only the eighth person to hold the position since the organ was installed. He is not yet 30, and is the founder and artistic director of the Barcelona Summer Organ Festival.
The Spreckels Organ Pavilion is one of the highlights of Balboa Park. The pavilion was part of the Panama-California Exposition, which opened in 1914. The organ was installed at the same time, a gift from John D. Spreckels to the people of the city. Austin Organs, Inc., built the instrument, which has a total of 5,017 pipes in 80 ranks.
The concerts are free, and given each Sunday at 2:00 pm Pacific time, 5:00 pm in New York, 6:00 pm in Rio de Janeiro, and 11:00 pm in Madrid, and can be heard on balboaparkconcerts.org. The next concert is this Sunday, February 14, and those who register on the website will see a good example of Logo Design.
